Sound is vibratory energy and it is measured in Hertz (Hz).
A person with good hearing will be able to hear sound within the range of 20 to 20,000Hz and although it depends on factors such as temperature and wind travels at around 770 mph (this is around 1 million times slower than light!). The visualisation of sound is known as ‘Cymatics’. The scientific study of Cymatics provides an amazing insight into the beautiful relationship between sound and the physical world.
Long before modern science ancient cultures such as the Vedic tradition (1500 BCE) were aware of the omnipresent qualities of sound. Everything in our physical world is made up of vibrating particles and from this sound is produced. It is no surprise that traditions such as the Vedas or even the book of Genesis developed beliefs around the idea that sound and creation are intrinsic to our very existence. Regardless of belief or cultural tradition, sound and music transcend language and are fundamental to life. Sound can speak to us without words and has the power to both sooth and excite us.
We are excellent conductors of sound and we can actually feel this on a physical level. One of the reasons for this is that our bodies are made up of 70-80% water (this varies from person to person) and itself being an excellent conductor of sound allows vibrations to travel through our bodies with ease.
Sound is primarily perceived through the ears where it is transformed into electrochemical impulses which are sent to the brain. The main point of contact is through the vibration of our ear drums but we can also feel sound through the body; we are effectively conductors of sound. Altogether we are very sensitive instruments and really can ‘feel’ music and connect with sound on both a physical and emotional level.
There is a direct connection between sound and how you feel; we know this both scientifically and through direct experience. You only have to think about how you select music to listen to depending on your mood and you will easily see that music has the power to affect your emotions and state of being. Some music picks you up and some calms you down.

Sound therapy is however a little different from music; it is generally without rhythm and when played carefully can help us move toward deeply meditative states. Instruments are played in such a way that our body relaxes and mind surrenders to a deeply transformative process. We begin to become aware of how our body and mind respond to the sounds and can reveal insights into our wellbeing. This is achieved by using techniques that allow entrainment to take place and move us towards our natural resonant frequency. Direct experience through personal practice is the best teacher. |
Through sound therapy you are provided with the opportunity to re-find peace and allow sound waves to tune you into a more harmonious state of being.
